Sun Protection

The Tots' Clubhouse Nursery School Sun Protection Policy

The Tots' Clubhouse Nursery School is Sun Protection Accredited to the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code (Melanoma Fund) and the Sun Safe Nurseries (Skcin charity), and will ensure that the sun protection actions are applied to our outdoor sessions from March – October.

Skin cancer is the world’s most common cancer, mainly affecting those who spend lots of time outdoors without sun protection. With just one blistering sunburn in childhood doubling the risk of melanoma (the most dangerous form of skin cancer).

We aim to do all we can to keep everyone protected when in the sun.  Between March to October, we all need to be aware of the risks of UV light.

We will ensure all children attending sessions understand the importance of sun protection and ask families to support us in carrying out the following actions.

We pledge to:

  1. PREPARE: Communicate with parents to ensure that everyone arrives ready for a day in the sun (whatever the weather in the morning).
  2. PROTECT: Recommend hats and sunglasses (where possible) and ensure sunscreen (SPF50+) reapplied at breaks.
  3. SHADE: Avoid direct sunlight, and seek shade during lunch breaks or whilst spectating others.
  4. HYDRATE: Ensure water is always available and sipped throughout the day.
  5. LEAD BY EXAMPLE: Act as a role model regarding sun protection, and inspire children to follow suit.

Important routines for sun protection:

Before dropping-off, please apply a layer of cream to your child’s face and any exposed areas.

We will assist your child to re-apply it during the day.  Where necessary, we will apply it throughout the day.

In addition, we will be using natural shade and parasols to add additional protection around the activities while children play and explore. We will monitor and limit the amount of time that children are exposed to the sun outside.

We will provide cool indoor spaces for children to rest and recover in hot weather.

Where possible, please provide the following for any sessions during the summer:

  • Labelled sun hat – with neck flap that covers the ears
  • Labelled puddle suit – no lining
  • Suitable clothing for the weather, light weight top and shorts or UV protection clothing
  • Labelled change of clothes and additional socks

Sandals, crocs and other exposed footwear need to be securely fastened to your child’s feet and should not have an open toe because children need to able to run safely.

We will provide Nivea SPF50+ waterproof sun cream for use by all children.

Where children require their own sun cream, families should provide a labelled bottle and a box of large latex-free gloves.  It must be in date and SPF50+.

If you have any questions, please email or ask a member of the team.
