Monitoring Progress

The Two-Year Old Progress Check

The two year old progress check is a statutory tool that is used to summarise a child's development and to determine whether they are developing within their age related expectation.  Where expectations aren't met, early intervention maybe required from other professionals.  It is not our responsibility to diagnose, but to share information for your child to gain the support that they may need.

Our approach to progress means that we engage with parents/carers/guardians, the child and other professionals (when needed) to contribute to the development of a high quality assessment of progress.  Our progress assessment will take place in the period between two and three years old.  We make professional judgements about the most appropriate time to undertake the assessment based on the child.  We believe that early intervention support is important, however, a huge amount of development can take place in the year between two and three and we do not want to disadvantage the child by assessing too early.  There is a delicate balance the two.

What does the Progress Check involve?

We follow a process to ensure that parents/carers/guardians understand how we assess progress.

We follow NHS guidance.

At admission to the Nursery School

  • We ask for parent contributions about their child's development.
  • We ask for child contributions about their own development.
  • We make parents aware that the two-year old progress check will take place.

When the child is two-years old

  • We ask parents to notify us of receipt of their correspondence for the check (the ASQ3 form).
  • We can carry out the assessment prior to meeting with the Health Visitor.
  • The Key Person agrees a date and time to meet with parents.

What does the Progress Check take account of?

  • Ongoing assessment and observation
  • Key Person's knowledge of the child
  • Views from the parent and child.
  • Views of other practitioners and professionals (as necessary)
  • Views of the Nursery School Manager/SENCO.

How do families receive a copy of the report?

  • The Key Person drafts the comments and makes an assessment.
  • The Manager/SENCO moderates the report, if necessary.
  • We meet with parents to discuss the report and agree next steps.
  • The report is finalised and consent to share is agreed.

What happens to the report?

  • Parents are given a copy.
  • Parents provide a copy to the relevant parties.
  • We action next steps within the setting.
  • We plan and review any additional support required or provided by other parties.

What happens next?

All of our progress reports feed into your child's portfolio for their transition folder into Reception or to another childcare provider.  We share all reports and records of progress with you over the year to discuss progress against expected development.  But, remember, every child develops in their own way and will discuss with you what this means.
