English as an Additional Language Policy

The Tots' Clubhouse Nursery School Languages Policy

We will value linguistic diversity, provide specialist teaching times for language learning and use a range of resources that support French, Spanish, German and Mandarin speakers.

We understand that speaking multiple languages enables:

  • Greater ability to communicate with all members of the family, including grandparents, or even family members who live in the family’s native country.
  • The chance to develop an identity which connects to their cultural heritage.
  • Greater development of cognitive abilities - greater ability to solve problems, more creativity, more opportunities on a personal and professional level  in future.
  • Ease of communication while travelling, choice of schools, and opens more options for the future.

Time and Place Language Method

We currently offer a weekly French lesson which is led by a French teacher who also speaks German and Spanish. This involves a range of books, music and games in French.

Supporting Families

We seek support for children and parents, as required. We understand that young bilingual learners need time to observe, tune into the new language and try out things that are unfamiliar to them.

Language Learning Environment

The setting will try to provide information in languages that reflect the needs of our families who speak English as an additional language.

Alongside valuing parent's home language, we will provide a range of meaningful contexts in which children have opportunities to develop English. English will be crucial as the language they use to access learning.
