The Book Barn

Every child will be given a book bag that goes home and comes back each session.

From 6 weeks to 6 months

Babies of 6 weeks old to 6 months receive an appropriate baby book to enjoy at home.  These will be black and white books, touch and feel books, and interactive books (mirrors, peekaboo).

Newly Exploring

Newly exploring little ones will receive an appropriate book that engages them in interacting with the book structure or story.  These will be touch and feel books, slide and see, tab books and lift the flap books.

Gaining Confidence

Confident explorers will begin to engage in reading constant-vowel-constant words.  Books will have simple words for ease of learning the first phonics sounds.  These will be repetitive.  Finger trail books and lift the flap books will also feature at this age to begin to develop hand-eye control.

Showing Preferences

Choosing books will be encouraged - choose a library book to take home too.  This develops independence, personal interests and choice.

Listening to Reading

Children from 2 years old will share books with a practitioner on a one to one basis.  We will talk about the pictures, what is happening and why.  We will encourage thinking and developing their awareness of storytelling.

We will focus on phonic development and word recognition.  Their books will reflect their interests, the words they are able to recognise, and their phonetic development.

Storytelling

Lessons about life are told through stories.  We learn about morals, behaviour and feelings through listening to experiences and situations in stories.

We will always have stories throughout the session.

Science

We teach Science through exploration and stories.

We have an extensive range of books that cover all Early Years topics.
