Administering Medicine and Allergen Medicine Policy

The Tots' Clubhouse Nursery School - Medicines and Allergens

The purpose of the Administering Medicines and Allergen Medicine Policy is to effectively support children with medical needs and to enable children to achieve regular attendance.

Parents/Guardians/Carers with children whom have long-term medical needs will meet with our team to discuss what arrangements need to be made to make reasonable adjustments for their care and learning.

Parents/Guardians/Carers should not send their child to the Nursery School if they are unwell.

Non-Prescribed Medicines

The Tots' Clubhouse Nursery School will administer non-prescribed medicine to a child e.g. liquid paracetamol.  These will be administered as described within the information sheet accompanying the medicine.  A Medical Administration Form will be completed at hand-over of the medicine.  Medicines will be kept as directed by the information sheet accompanying the medicine.  A record of the time the medicine was given to the child, prior to attendance, is a requirement of hand-over.

The Tots' Clubhouse Nursery School reserves the right to refuse to administer non-prescribed medicines.

Prescribed Medicines

The Tots' Clubhouse Nursery School will administer prescribed medicine to a child e.g. inhaler, antibiotics.  These will be administered as described within the information sheet accompanying the medicine and/or letter from a Pharmacist/GP/hospital.  A Medical Administration Form will be completed at hand-over of the medicine.  Medicines will be kept as directed by the information sheet accompanying the medicine.

In all cases, the Medical Administration Form will be the record of what has been administered, how and when.  This should be reviewed and signed by the Parent/Guardian/Carer as well as the Manager/staff member.

Emergency Medicines

The Tots' Clubhouse Nursery School will administer non-prescribed medicine e.g. liquid paracetamol to a child in an emergency situation.  An emergency situation is defined by a call to the emergency services or a prolonged wait for the emergency contacts to collect the child before medical support can be sought.

Allergen Medicines

The Tots' Clubhouse Nursery School staff have received training in Paediatric First Aid including the use of allergen medicines such as an EpiPen.  Allergen medicine will be administered as required and as per instructions on the information sheet provided with the medicine.

Allergies are required to be disclosed during the registration process.  Any medication required must be provided by the Parent/Guardian/Carer.
